The only trouble with words
is that you can’t communicate with them…
Like me like I like you…
Being in love is when two people
are better together
than they are apart…
With a little madness you can cut the rope
and be free…
If only words
could take the place of time,
I’d tell you a year
in a matter of rhyme…
If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life’s exciting variety, not something to fear.
Night time. When all the edges disappear
and atmosphere becomes a good color
to hide behind.
It’s then, in the shadows of the earth,
that all the wild creatures can finally be wild,
and for a brief time even the trees can stop growing.
And no one will ever know.
Something inside is telling me
That I’ve got your secret.
Fear is the lock, and laughter the key
To your heart.
And I love you.
There you stood on the edge of your feathers,
Expecting to fly.
While I laughed, I wondered whether
I could wave goodbye,
Knowing that you’d gone.
Love is the key we must turn,
Truth is the flame we must burn,
Freedom the lesson we must learn.
Do you know what I mean?
Have your eyes really seen?
I’m not the one to tell this world
How to get along;
I only know that peace will come
When all hate is gone.
And I’m searching for the Dolphin in the sea.
Sometimes I wonder, do you ever think of me?
The smile in your eyes
Was never so sweet before.
I came down from the skies
To cry you a song.
It’s been a long time,
I’m still shaking my wings,
I’m a blackbird,
I’ve got changes to sing.
Everybody is a star.
I can feel it when you shine on me.
I love you for who you are,
Not the one you feel you need to be.
But how will Love retain
It’s warmth and glow?
Men who never change
Will never know.
To love someone is difficult
When lovers do not know
That loving can be easy if
The lovers make it so.
I would ford rivers,
Climb mountains, replace
The stars in the sky for
A glimpse of your face.
I would fight demons,
Slay dragons, command
Armies of men for
The touch of your hand.
With all my will but much against my heart,
I must depart.
Be sad, my love, but do not be concern’d.
I will return.
I used to watch the hours pass
And never used to care –
Now I count the minutes knowing
One may bring you here.
Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window, hand-in-hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chain of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outré results, it would make all fiction, with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions, most stale and unprofitable…
“You know what?” said the frog to his girlfriend. “I just read a story about a frog that got kissed by a beautiful princess and was changed into a handsome prince. Wouldn’t you like me better if I was a handsome prince?”
“I doubt it,” said his girlfriend.
Nevertheless, the frog though about being a handsome prince, and the more he thought abut it, the more he like the idea. It became an obsession with him.
He began to look for ways to have himself kissed by beautiful princesses. He frequented carnivals and amusement parks and spent all his money at the kissing booths. Soon he was broke.
He returned home to his girlfriend, penniless and still a frog. He was surprised to find that she was happy to see him.
“Even though I’m not a handsome prince?” said the frog.
“I fell in love with a handsome frog,” said his girlfriend, “not a handsome prince.”
I remember, from when I was a very much younger turtle, that I had a friend who was not quite like the rest of us. He was always wandering off by himself when he grew tired of the games we never ceased to enjoy.
One day day he built a flying machine.
We were all very excited about his flying machine, and perhaps a little fearful, for no turtle had ever left the ground before. My friend, laughing at our fears, climbed into his flying machine and spun off into the sky, waving at us from a great height. When he returned to the ground he spoke to us of strange sights in breathless words which we could not understand. Each day he boarded his flying machine and soared off into the clouds; each day his words grew more difficult to comprehend.
Fearing that he was a little mad, we decided to ignore him and continue in our games. Finally, one day he disappeared in a bank of clouds and was never seen again.
From time to time I hear rumors from traveling strangers about my friend. Some say he crashed into a lake and went straight to the bottom. Others contend that he grew ambitious and flew directly into the sun. But somehow I feel he is still up there in his flying machine, seeing sights that no turtle has ever seen.
I went to the Owl because I heard he had the Answer. I found him at home, and it seemed to me that he, sitting silent in utmost concentration, must indeed have the Answer. “It is said,” I spoke, “that you alone have the Answer.”
The Owl replied, “My friend, as much as is said of me is true.”
And so I asked the Owl the Question.
He answered me carefully and with infinite patience. “You must find out for yourself.”
Thinking I had been deceived, I spoke angrily. “Did I need the Owl to tell me I must think for myself?”
“But, my friend,” the Owl replied. “THAT is the Answer.”
The years pass
as parallel rails –
And it seems as if only yesterday
You were too old
Or too young
And you sometimes wish you had the time
and save one day
for tomorrow –
But it wouldn’t be at all the same
if you stayed…
If you must, absolutely must –
on stones and walls
We reach –
and in reaching we discover we are friends.
We touch –
and touching we discover that we love.
